After ten years and 91 exhibitions, Kerns neighbor Laura Russell will close the retail portion of her 23 Gallery business this month. She and her husband Steve will move to a property they own in the Beaumont-Wilshire neighborhood. Although the gallery at 623 N.E. 23rd Ave. is closing, Russell will continue to sell her collection of unique and limited-edition artist books online, through www.23sandy.com, and via sales trips and conferences.
“Ten years in the gallery has been a page-turner of a journey and I can’t wait for the next chapter,” said Russell. “Steve and I have loved living in the house behind the gallery and the low overhead of owning the building has made for a wonderful business. Things change though, and the time has come to sell the building. I am planning to take a sabbatical from exhibitions for a year and the gallery side of the operation will be closing.”
Steve Russell, a commercial realtor with Steel Bridge Realty and the former land-use chair and treasurer of the Kerns neighborhood association, has listed the 1928-square-foot home – with 915-square-foot storefront and 960-square-foot shop space – for $995,000.
“I feel so fortunate to work in this exciting field,” said Laura Russell. “It was my dream to bring art-gallery-level credibility to book art and I hope that has helped advance our field. I’m grateful for all the help in making that dream come true. I’m very excited about the future and finding studio time for my own books.”
