On May 1, Lani Freelander opened Hair Therapy Salon at 1908 N.E. Broadway in the Sullivan’s Gulch neighborhood. The space had previously been home to a salon called Trio that closed after more than 30 years when the owners retired. Freelander currently has four stylists on her team and is looking to hire two more. Carmen Escalante, Shelby Strode, Stephanie Benedict and Raven Avila are the stylists on board who helped Freelander open the space.
“I had been searching for just the right salon space and when I found this location, I instantly knew it was the one,” said Freelander. “My home address is 1908 and the salon address is also 1908 – so that just clarified for me that this was truly meant to be. I started doing hair over seven years ago. The hair salon is my sanctuary. All of my problems and worries melt away while I’m there and I love interacting with every single client and building special bonds.”
Freelander is a graduate of the Marinello Beauty School for Cosmetology.
“I never saw myself becoming a hairstylist and salon owner,” said Freelander. “After high school, I went to community college and transferred to Clark Atlanta University in Georgia. I majored in early childhood education and switched to social work. I moved back to Portland and worked at my dad’s business for a few months. One night, my mom’s friend asked me what I wanted to do with my life. She suggested I become a hairstylist because I have an outgoing personality. I’m always changing my hairstyles and color and I’m into fashion. Seven years later, here I am – owning my own hair salon. I’ll never, ever give up on my dreams.”
Freelander signed the lease for the space on March 17 and took a little over a month to get her shop up and running.
“Weinmann Painting did the paint job. Paulsen’s did the flooring. Brent Jacugh from Rex Walker Plumbing did the plumbing and Rose City Awning replaced the awning. Rick Wade designed our logo and color scheme and S2 Imaging did the window and door design install,” said Freelander. “I still have some more changes to make but, so far, the salon is off to a beautiful start.”
