This spring, executive chef Anh Luu purchased the Kerns neighborhood’s Tapalaya from owner Chantal Angot. Located on “restaurant row” at 28 N.E. 28th Ave., Tapalya is known for its Cajun and Creole small plates and live New Orleans music. Luu was born in New Orleans to Vietnamese refugees and came to Portland after Hurricane Katrina destroyed their home in 2005. She been head chef of Tapalaya since 2013 and made a winning appearance on the Food Network’s “Chopped” program in 2015.
“Chantal has been such an amazing and supportive owner all these years, giving me the platform to create dishes so personal to me and for that I’m very grateful, said Luu. “It’s an honor to carry this concept forward as both chef and owner.”
With nearly four months under her belt, Luu will now offer a happy hour starting one hour earlier on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 3:00 p.m. The rest of the week, Tapalaya’s happy hour will begin at 4:00 p.m.
“I love being a part of this neighborhood and with all of the people out-and-about, walking, eating and shopping on 28th and Burnside, on these beautiful summer weekends, I wanted to offer our happy hour for longer hours to help make their weekend experience even more fun in our neighborhood,” said Luu.
