On October 1, Sullivan’s Gulch neighbors Joan D’Arcy and Lee Hill will launch their first annual Boomerama 50+ Health and Age Less Living Expo, an event created specifically for local baby boomers, seniors and their friends and families. Held at the Airport Holiday Inn Columbia Convention Center at 8439 N.E. Columbia Blvd. in the Sumner neighborhood, the one-day event will feature a blend of boomer-related products, resources and entertainment, including health and wellness solutions, financial specialists, aging-in-place designers, leaders in home care and empty nest-focused real estate professionals. Highlights will include a panel discussion on aging in place with Villages NW, a presentation on “encore entrepreneurship” by Sabin neighbor and Better, Smarter, Richer author Jackie B. Peterson, a complementary beauty bar from Phagans School of Hair Design and plenty of giveaways, drawings and prizes.
“We Baby Boomers are not like previous generations where we want to quietly retire,” said D’Arcy, who has owned Healing Waters and Sacred Spaces on Northeast 24th and Broadway for 19 years. “Life should be lived and enjoyed to the fullest. This was part of the impetus for birthing Boomerama. Many boomers are entering second and third careers, actively creating a better world, seeking ways to rejuvenate their minds and bodies in order to remain relevant in this fast paced world. We were also very motivated to give back to the community – which is why we have chosen to donate 100 percent of admission proceeds to local charities that serve boomers and seniors right here in our own backyard.”
All attendance proceeds will be divided equally among five local, senior-focused charities, including the Hollywood Senior Center, the Oregon Food Bank in the Sunderland neighborhood and the People’s Pantry at Metropolitan Community Church in Sullivan’s Gulch. With 100 local and national companies exhibiting, Boomerama is sponsored by Kaiser Permanente Thrive, Home Instead Senior Care, KPAM News Talk 860 and Sunny 1550 AM. Urban Excursions will be picking up attendees every hour on the hour from Hollywood Senior Center, 1820 N.E. 40th Ave., and shuttle them to and from the expo.
