In November, Sizzle Pie co-founders and Cully neighbors Matt Jacobson and Mikey McKennedy will open their fourth Portland location in the former home of Atomic Pizza, adjacent to the Hollywood Theatre at 4144 N.E. Sandy Blvd. in the Hollywood district. Atomic Pizza owners Jenna Forzley and Bill McCracken announced the closure of their shop last month, as they were unable to negotiate a new lease for the property. The original Atomic Pizza at 1936 N. Killingsworth in the Overlook neighborhood remains open for business.
Voted best pizza in the city four years in a row by Portland Mercury readers, Sizzle Pie first opened in the Buckman neighborhood in January of 2011 as a joint venture between heavy-metal lovers Jacobson – the owner of Relapse Records and Wayfinder Brewing – and artist McKennedy.
The chain now counts four full locations in Portland, plus two stands at the Moda Center, one restaurant in Eugene, one in Seattle and a new location in Brooklyn, N.Y. The original Buckman location recently re-opened after losing three weeks of business to smoke damage from a fire at the neighboring B-Side Tavern in September.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Sizzle Pie to Hollywood and to start serving their great pizza at the theater,” said Hollywood Theatre Executive Director Doug Whyte. “We think they’re going to be a great fit for our audience and we’re especially excited to finally have some vegan options available.”
“The space and the equipment are in great shape, so we don’t plan on changing the layout much,” said McKennedy. “We’re just going to clean it up and add some sizzle. I’ve known about this neighborhood for a long time and used to live right down the street. It’s a great area and we’re thrilled to be right next door to Little Axe records.”
Known for its salads and pies named after Roman tyrants and hardcore punk bands, Sizzle Pie will offer 40 varieties of thin-crust pizza at its new location and will be open 365 days a year from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. on weekdays and until 4:00 a.m. on weekends. The brand offers pizza by the slice, full pies and salads – with plenty of vegan and gluten-free options. At the Hollywood outpost, Sizzle Pie will also assume Atomic’s role as official pizza purveyor for the Hollywood Theatre’s popular pizza-by-the-slice concession stand known as the Pie Hole. Unlike other Sizzle Pie locations, the new spot won’t serve liquor, just beer and wine.
“We are super excited to join the Hollywood community and to work with the fine folks at the legendary theater,” said Jacobsen. “We look forward to proudly supporting the nonprofit while slinging slices to the patrons of the Pie Hole.”
