In late September, Nina Varanun Hand opened a boutique and gift shop called Moments Have You at 1724 N.E. 40th Ave. in the Hollywood district. The space, adjacent to Columbia River Brewing and just down the street from the Hollywood Senior Center, has been home to at least two other gift shops, Pam Park’s Lemontree and Stacey Dycus’ 4PDX.
It took Hand eight days to paint her new floor with a series of perfectly aligned black and white vertical stripes that run east from the front of the shop, creating a sense of airiness and whimsy.
“It was a big face lift, but I think it was worth all the pain,” said Hand, who was born and raised in Thailand. “I started this little shop, hopeful that it will also be my little creative space. I have my own greeting card line and also sell some original paintings, so I want to continue creating them. I also hope that this will be the place for amazing locals to come and share their beautiful, genius creations. This city is truly filled with so many talented and crafty people and I believe this is my time.”
Hand has degrees in advertising and business and has worked as a buyer and visual merchandiser for locally owned businesses for 16 years. In addition to her line of Moments Have You greeting cards and original paintings, she offers jewelry, personal accessories, hats, scarves, gloves, purses, bags, paper goods and home accessories.
“I am offering gifts for your life and home that are fun, heart-warming, edgy and cute – and of course cat stuff – because I’m a crazy cat lady,” said Hand. “I hope customers will come in to enjoy beautiful merchandise and turn around to read some items in the store, laughing their behinds off or even shedding a tear from reading something touching and meaningful to their life. I want people to discover and create their moments in my store – Moments Have You!”
“I’ve watched many films there,” said Hand. “Every time I walked around after a showing, it felt like this neighborhood needed some type of small Portland gift shop – like the one I’m creating.”
