Alia Korot, a St. Mary’s Academy senior who lives in Northeast Portland, has been named a semifinalist in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship program. About one percent of all U.S. high school students taking the National Merit qualifying test achieve semifinalist status, according to a news release from St. Mary’s.
Korot, who lives in the Rose City Park neighborhood, plans to study human biology in college to prepare for a medical career, said her mother, Kammy Kern-Korot. Like other semifinalists, she will continue in the competition for about 7,500 National Merit scholarships, worth approximately $32 million, that will be awarded in the spring of 2018.
Other St. Mary’s students from Northeast Portland were named commended students for their test scores. They include Hannah Bachman, Sydney Buffonge, Nina Fletcher and Helen Rossmiller.
