Last fall, Carolyn DeLany-Reif and Janelle McDonald launched a travel company called Folk Ways Tours out of their homes in the Kerns and Laurelhurst neighborhoods.
“I approached Janelle about starting this business in the summer of 2017,” said DeLany-Reif. “We are both over 50 and have had other careers and raised children. I have a professional theater background and for the past 11 years have been the choir director and theater teacher at Laurelhurst and Beverly Cleary Schools. Having traveled extensively through my work and my husband’s, the idea of a tour business with a focus on cultural experiences started to take shape.”
The partners began with a tour to Ireland in October and have five tours to Ireland and the United Kingdom scheduled for 2018.
“We felt there is a niche for a tour company that creates trips we ourselves want to go on,” said DeLany-Reif. “Our tours offer small group sizes, interesting and charming locations, ease of transportation and comfort – and a focus on the music, history and culture of the area.”
Both DeLany-Reif and McDonald have lived in the neighborhood for nearly twenty years.
“We love visiting T.C. O’Leary’s on Alberta and are frequent customers at Costello’s on Broadway,” said DeLany-Reif. “I think we all have many chapters in our lives and there are new adventures at any age. We decided to start our new chapter with this business.”
