In November, Venture Portland awarded $43,500 in grants to 19 business district projects throughout the city. The projects range from retail-focused holiday events to dynamic websites and first-time professional staff. The grants will leverage an additional $116,672 in private business district investment.
Projects in Northeast and North neighborhood districts include a Kenton shop local promotion from November 24 through January 5, a Northeast Broadway health and wellness event slated for April 2018, a Parkrose membership campaign, and banner projects for the St. Johns and Williams districts.
“The grants committee was incredibly excited to receive a record number of applications from business districts,” said Alison Stoll, grants committee chair and Parkrose Business Association delegate. “Districts citywide proposed some really imaginative projects and we can’t wait to see the positive impact these will have on our local economy.”
In addition to biannual benchmark grants, the competitive round this fall included two new funding streams – district staffing kickstarter grants and corporate infrastructure improvement grants.
In Northeast and North Portland, the Beaumont and Broadway districts received district staffing kickstarter grants and the Soul District and Williams District received corporate infrastructure improvement grants.
“Our grants stimulate neighborhood economic development in real time,” said Matthew Micetic, Venture Portland’s vice president and Foster Area Business Association delegate. “These new catalytic grants are a great addition that will help districts to improve stability and increase membership, business benefits and revenue.”
Through fiscal year 2016-17, Venture Portland has awarded $96,000 to fund 34 projects in 20 business districts, leveraging an additional $521,837 in private investment. Since 1995, Venture Portland has granted more than $1.4 million to fund 519 business district projects, leveraging more than $4.7 million in additional private investment.
